Sh. Anil Rai Gupta,
Chairman & Managing Director, Havells India Ltd.

Carrying the baton into a brave new world

Shri Anil Rai Gupta is the son of the Founder Chairman of Havells – Shri Qimat Rai Gupta and he is the Company’s Chairman & Managing Director.

He worked shoulder to shoulder with his late father for 22 years (since 1992) until 2014 when the mantle and the responsibilities of the Group were vested in him.

Anil is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University and later went abroad to pursue MBA (Marketing and Finance) from the Wake Forest University, North Carolina, USA.

Additionally he was also elected as the Vice President of the Students Government Association in his University. He joined Havells in 1992, and since then led the Company to new heights, and destinations, in turn taking on the mission to grow Havells into a world class enterprise.

In his initial years with the Company, he designed, articulated and implemented its marketing strategy that was largely instrumental in transforming a family brand into a global brand that is renowned for its technology, innovation, customer friendliness and product range.

In 2003, Anil guided the Company to diversify from a pure industrial product Company into the competitive domain of consumer products. His foresight and ability to navigate consumer marketing stood the Company in good stead and was instrumental in the Company being able to successfully survive the global recession of 2008 unscathed while still reporting profits.

Anil took the vision of his father to modernize the manufacturing processes of the Company and its overall infrastructure. As a result of his continued efforts, today Havells has the best infrastructure and the most modern plants across the entire electrical industry in India.

He was also instrumental in Havells forging new alliances and acquisitions. In a daring and audacious move, he led the efforts for acquiring the global brand Sylvania enterprise German lighting systems and fixtures Company that was at that time 1.5 times bigger than Havells. This single acquisition transformed what was once a domestic enterprise into one of the world’s largest lighting companies. Since the acquisition, Havells has gone on from strength to strength and established undisputed market leadership.

In a move that was symbiotic to his father’s belief in giving back to society, Anil, with the blessings and encouragement of his father QRG, initiated the Mid-day meal programme through the QRG Foundation. Today, the Foundation serves freshly cooked nutritious and hygienic food to over 50,000 school going children across 666 government schools in Alwar district of Rajasthan. More recently the Foundation has undertaken a program to build up sanitation facilities especially for girls in all the schools where it provides mid-day meals.

The effort is directed towards the goal of providing school children with an ideal environment for education and an incentive to stay within the school system.

Anil is a firm believer of the need for future leaders to have a firm grounding in the study of liberal arts. Towards this goal, he has become one of the founding members of India’s first Liberal Arts University – the Ashoka University.

Along with his aggressive pursuit of economic, social, and societal goals of Havells, Anil is keenly interested in music and a golf lover. He lives in Delhi with his wife and two children.
